With many of the big names having to wait until midweek before getting their competition underway, Sunday was a chance to have a look at a player in Goffin who is hoping to bridge that gap to the top men.

Indeed, for those in the area, it was a match well worth checking out. As Stuart Fraser of the Times relayed, this competition is played in especially picturesque surroundings:

Goffin played as if the pressure were off. The 10th seed was brilliant from the off in this one, keeping Darcis on the back foot throughout the first set with some pinpoint ground strokes and brilliant angles.

After a couple of early breaks to move 4-1 ahead, Goffin clearly had the measure of his Davis Cup team-mate. The Tennis TV Twitter feed reflected on some classy play:

Darcis, despite the plush surroundings, looked as though he wanted to be anywhere else in the world at the start of the second stanza as his compatriot piled on the pressure. Goffin broke twice in the first three games to end any hopes of a fightback.

As we can see, midway through the second set, he was in the groove:

Eventually, Goffin saw the second set out 6-1; in the second round, he'll face a qualifier or Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Meanwhile, Simon will take on Novak Djokovic in the next phase of the competition after he beat Jaziri in straight sets. Simon was content with a "solid" display, per the official ATP World Tour website"It was not perfect, but it was still solid. I will take this as it is."

Also in the hat for Round 2 is Sousa, as he coasted past a below-par Mayer. The Portuguese had far too much class on the day, with his opponent a long way off the standards he was setting in a 6-3, 6-2 win.
