Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak

Matt JonesApr 15, 2017

Manchester United will reportedly launch a double raid on Atletico Madrid this summer, with forward Antoine Griezmann and goalkeeper Jan Oblak said to be the targets of a potential £125 million switch.

According to Paul Hetherington of the Daily Star Sunday, the Red Devils are not content with trying to prise Griezmann out of the club, having been long-term admirers of the effervescent French forward. With doubts over the David De Gea's future, United are said to be looking at Oblak too.

It's reported that United are aware they would have to part with around £85 million in order to sign Griezmann, while Oblak is said to be rated at £40 million.

As relayed in the piece, the Red Devils have tracked the Atletico striker as he's established himself as one of the standout forwards in the game. As noted by Squawka Football, in 2017 in particular, he's been magnificent:

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has aided Griezmann's development of since the attacker arrived at the club in 2014.

The Frenchman was formerly a capricious wide player, although since joining Atletico, he's played through the middle of the pitch, typically as a split striker. From that position, Griezmann's searing pace, dribbling ability and composure in possession has seen him become a world-class operator.

Additionally, the Frenchman has added an industrious side to his game, something that would no doubt appeal to United boss Jose Mourinho. It's something Kieran Canning of AFP commented on recently:

Although United could arguably do with some support in attack for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, should De Gea move on to Real Madrid, there would be a massive void to fill between the sticks.

According to Hetherington, the European champions will make another move for the United stopper in the summer, with a bid of £65 million set to be lodged. If the Red Devils are on the lookout for a world-class replacement, then Oblak may be the perfect player.

The report suggested that Mourinho has "ordered regular scouting checks" on the Slovenian and that Griezmann believes his team-mate is the best goalkeeper on the planet. Per WhoScored.com, strikers have found the stopper difficult to get the better of at the highest level:

Signing one of these superstar names would be testing enough for United in the summer; getting two on board would be a massive challenge.

But the Red Devils have shown, whether they're in the UEFA Champions League or not, they still possess an allure. That much was evident last summer when Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, for a world-record fee, arrived.

Bleacher Report's Rob Blanchette believes that a player like Griezmann could convert United from pretenders into contenders too:

Atletico would surely dig their heels in if United were to come calling for their two prized assets. After all, they're regularly challenging for the top honours and are scheduled to move into a new stadium in the summer.

As they begin a new era away from the Vicente Calderon, losing their top scorer and one of their key defensive cogs would be a huge blow for Simeone's side. However, United have the prestige, gravitas and financial clout to test the resolve of any club in football.
