Arsenal Reportedly Want Marc Overmars Director Role Amid £200M Rebuild Rumours

Alex KebleApr 12, 2017

Former Arsenal midfielder Marc Overmars is reportedly being targeted by his old club for a role as director of football amid rumours of a £200 million summer spending spree, per John Cross and James Whaling for the Mirror

Overmars is the director of football at Ajax, but the Gunners want him to take a leading role in their recruitment strategy as part of a major shake-up at the Emirates.

The Dutchman made 100 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000, winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in his debut season in London.

If he rejoins the club, Overmars will be expected to oversee transfer dealings in what should be a busy summer for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, who is planning to stay, per Cross and Whaling.

Jack Wilshere, Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mesut Ozil could all be set to leave this summer, which would add significant funds to a transfer kitty that already stands at £100 million, per Cross and Whaling. David Ospina and Lucas Perez are also mentioned as potential departures.

What's more, Hector Bellerin remains likely to leave the club for Barcelona, per Mundo Deportivo (h/t CalcioMercato.com), but Alexis Sanchez will reportedly run down his contract at the club, which is set to expire in 2018, per Cross and Whaling.

The above sales would free up plenty of space in the squad for new recruits, and Wenger is reportedly the man to be trusted with drastically rebuilding the Arsenal squad.

Joining the club could be Alexandre Lacazette—who is "top of the striker hitlist," per Cross and Whaling—and several British-based players, including Wilfried Zaha, Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembele and Jordan Pickford, according to the same report.

With so many deals planned, it is no wonder Arsenal are reportedly looking for a new director of football to help with recruitment.

If Overmars joins from Ajax, he could be a busy man this summer—and increasingly, it looks like he could be working alongside his old boss, Wenger. The Frenchman may not have the full backing of the fanbase, but it appears that he is still trusted by a board ready to rebuild the team ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
