Patrick Mahomes to Have Wrist Injury Re-Examined Ahead of 2017 NFL Draft
On Tuesday, 2017 NFL draft prospect Patrick Mahomes said he would return to Indianapolis to have his left wrist "re-examined during NFL medical rechecks," according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The quarterback finished his college career at Texas Tech with 11,252 yards through the air, 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions, completing 63.5 percent of his passes.
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller ranked Mahomes the No. 3 quarterback in the 2017 draft, noting his "tools are the best of any quarterback in this class" while adding "Mahomes has some Brett Favre in his game—the good and bad kind." He gave Mahomes a Round 2 grade and compared his skill set to Blake Bortles'.
NFL.com's Bucky Brooks, meanwhile, ranked Mahomes as the No. 4 signal-caller in this draft class, noting he "has shot up the charts due to his exceptional arm talent as a fearless gunslinger. Coaches are smitten by his raw ability, and some believe he could develop into a Matthew Stafford-like playmaker down the road."
Despite Mahomes' obvious skills, however, Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus sees him as a major project:
That's the rub: He has clear talent, but he's unpolished. There are questions of how his gunslinger style will fit in a more conservative NFL offense. And teams will be monitoring his wrist closely leading up to the draft at the end of April.
But given his tools, it's hard to imagine Mahomes will slip very far into the second round or even remain on the board past the first round on April 27.
