The NFL will hope for a better start to the preseason than last year. A problem with the paint on the field forced the cancellation of the 2016 Hall of Fame Game. The league offered refunds for fans who purchased a ticket to the event.
In their first game since winning Super Bowl LI, the New England Patriots welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars in the opening week of the preseason. The game will also give fans a first look at Brandin Cooks and Dwayne Allen in a Patriots uniform after they joined New England this offseason.
In their first year as crosstown rivals since 1960, the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers will face off in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for a Week 3 matchup. NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano noted how long it has been since the Chargers made the trip to play the Rams in L.A.:
While the preseason is mostly about getting players ready for the regular season, both the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans will want to see something from their starting quarterbacks as they hope to establish themselves as Super Bowl contenders.
The Broncos and Texans were among the notable teams in the Tony Romo sweepstakes before the veteran quarterback announced he was joining CBS Sports. Now, Denver likely faces another year of Trevor Siemian under center, and Houston is pinning its hopes on Tom Savage.
A strong preseason from either player could at least allay some fans' fears about their suitability for a starting role in 2017.
With the preseason schedule out of the way, the NFL can shift its focus toward completing the regular-season slate. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in March the league was aiming for a release date between April 17 and 21.
