Saturday Recap
After Jordan Thompson and Nick Kyrgios respectively dispatched Sock and John Isner on Friday, the United States needed a big performance in Brisbane, Australia, to keep their hopes alive heading into Sunday.
That looked unlikely when the Aussie duo eased to the first set inside half an hour, per the Davis Cup:
However, the American pair responded well to the setback and won 10 of the next 13 games thanks to some clinical and tidy play and soon found themselves in front.
A series of mistakes from Sock helped Australia pull level in the fourth. The hosts also capitalised on some lapsed serving from Johnson, as noted by The Australian's Courtney Walsh:
Johnson made amends in the decisive set, as he fired home the forehand winner to break Peers at match point.
Per the ATP World Tour, U.S. team captain Jim Courier isn't getting carried away with the result: "I'm super proud of these guys today, but it still will take a monstrous effort from us on Day 3."
For the Americans to progress, they need to win both singles rubbers on Sunday, which requires Sock to beat Kyrgios and Isner to beat Thompson, but they've given themselves a fighting chance.

Novak Djokovic watched on as his Serbia team-mates completed victory over Spain.
Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and Marc Lopez 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
The Italian pairing of Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi kept their country's faint hopes alive after a breathtaking win against Ruben Bemelmans and Joris De Loore.
The duo prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) against the pair from Belgium.
