WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 5
Wednesday's episode of NXT may not have featured much in the way of star power, and it was hardly a newsworthy follow-up to TakeOver: Orlando, but it was still a fun romp that introduced the NXT Universe to Elias Samson's most entertaining counterpart.
El Vagabundo wrestled his first, and only, match in NXT Wednesday, squaring off with Oney Lorcan. The masked luchador, his secret identity obvious to everyone watching, lost to Lorcan and was exposed as the fraud he was.
Heavy Machinery continued to make its mark in the tag team division, obliterating The Bollywood Boyz and taking one step closer to the NXT Tag Team Championships, held by The Authors of Pain.
The Iconic Duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay made their presence felt. Unfortunately for Aliyah, she was the unfortunate soul left at the mercy of the brand's resident mean girls.
Relive the highlights, winners, grades and analysis from Wednesday's WWE Network broadcast here.
Aliyah vs. Peyton Royce
1 of 3Aliyah showed great fire as the energetic babyface battling the disrespectful Peyton Royce. She had to constantly keep her eye on Billie Kay at ringside. And it was a distraction by the Aussie that allowed Royce to seize control of the match.
Royce applied a ropes-based submission hold and arrogantly slapped her opponent's head and face. Aliyah fought back and was surging late, even delivering a jumping seated senton for a count of two.
The heel countered a flurry of hip tosses and arm drags with a bridging fisherman's suplex to score the pinfall victory.
Result
Peyton Royce defeated Aliyah.
Grade
C
Analysis
Royce and Kay are great heels.
Their facial expressions and body language are phenomenal, and Royce's in-ring game has improved significantly over the past year. A modern-day take on LayCool, the future is bright for Royce and Kay.
It may be even brighter for Aliyah.
What she does may be basic, but she does it with an energy and just enough twist to help her stand out. She has an in-ring charisma that NXT could stand to exploit more often.
Heavy Machinery vs. The Bollywood Boyz
2 of 3Heavy Machinery impressed once again Wednesday night, bowling over The Bollywood Boyz en route to a decisive and definitive victory.
Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovic tossed Harv and Gurv around the ring with reckless abandon. Using belly-to-belly overhead suplexes and corner splashes, they overwhelmed the dancing tag team before finishing them off with a double-team maneuver.
Result
Heavy Machinery defeated The Bollywood Boyz.
Grade
B-
Analysis
Knight and Dozovic are a damn fun tag team.
The energy they bring to their performances is greater than that of any heavyweight tandem in WWE memory. They are explosive and fun, can rile the crowd and are not above having fun as they decimate their opponents.
They are a stark contrast to other massive teams and could serve as the perfect change of pace for NXT tag team champions The Authors of Pain.
Oney Lorcan vs. El Vagabundo
3 of 3NXT introduced a new Superstar named El Vagabundo Wednesday night.
El Vagabundo looked and sounded suspiciously like "The Drifter" Elias Samson. He even offered to sing a song.
Oney Lorcan interrupted, suggesting Vagabundo was Samson. It earned him a big boot to the midsection heading into the break.
Lorcan recovered and unloaded with a series of running hip attacks in the corner. Vagabundo cut the assault off, attacking from behind.
Moments later, the smaller competitor ripped off his opponent's mask and revealed him to be Samson.
Lorcan finished with a blockbuster for the win. After the match, Samson was ejected from the arena.
Result
Oney Lorcan defeated Elias "El Vagabundo" Samson.
Grade
B+
Analysis
Samson was as over as he has ever been here as El Vagabundo. The character, kooky and fun, struck the audience as entertaining, and the fans bought in. Whereas The Drifter was regularly booed out of the building, the fresh and new Vagabundo character was welcomed with open arms.
It is almost disappointing that Samson donned the mask only once on television because he could have finally found a character to elevate him in ways the guitar-playing bad guy never did.
Lorcan winning as fine. In fact, it is nice to see him win a match for once.
Whether he can build on that is the question.
