Conor McGregor Coach Says He Believes Floyd Mayweather Fight Will Happen in 2017

Timothy RappApr 5, 2017

Conor McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, became the latest party to weigh in on the ongoing saga involving the potential superfight between the UFC superstar and retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.

And he believes the fight will happen.

"In my mind, it's on," he told the Bill and Boz show on Fox Sports News 50, per TMZ Sports. "That's the mentality we're in. As far as I'm concerned, I really believe it's gonna happen this year."

As for training for boxing rather than a UFC match, Kavanagh said it was an entirely different beast but one McGregor could tame.

"It's simpler, less skills involved," he added.

Finally, he said the two sides were close to agreeing on a fighting weight at 147 pounds, 21 pounds lighter than McGregor's weight in Aug. 2016 ahead of his fight with Nate Diaz.

Whether the fight actually happens remains to be seen. The negotiations have been rife with complications from the start, namely that McGregor is under contract with the UFC, though Damon Martin of Fox Sports reported "multiple sources have indicated...that a card in mid-September in Las Vegas seems to be the most likely landing spot if both parties can come to an agreement for the fight."

Kavanagh acknowledged the complicated negotiations.

"There's a lot of fingers in the pie on this one," he said, per Martin. "There's different promotions, different organizations, different commissions that are involved, but as far as I'm concerned, I really believe it's going to happen this year. ... Let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork."
