In the first surprise of WrestleMania 33, Mojo Rawley won the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal.
Rawley received a helping hand from his friend, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. Gronk entered the ring to deliver a shoulder block to Jinder Mahal after Mahal threw a drink on him outside the ring. WWE provided a replay of Gronk's interference:
Rawley prevailed after last eliminating Mahal. WWE provided a photo of he and Gronk celebrating in the ring:
Rawley reflected on the win on Twitter:
Braun Strowman and Big Show were two of the biggest favorites to win the match. However, multiple wrestlers teamed up to dump the giants over the top rope.
WWE illustrated just how much volume was necessary to ensure Strowman's elimination:
Rawley is the second former NXT star to win the Battle Royal in as many years. Baron Corbin captured the trophy at WrestleMania 32. It was Corbin's first televised match under the WWE banner.
The Lone Wolf didn't immediately become a top name in WWE, but his stock steadily rose to the point that he challenged Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 33.
Rawley and Zack Ryder won a No. 1 contender Battle Royal for the SmackDown tag team championships, but they had to relinquish their title shot after Ryder was injured in the match.
Being the last man standing in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal is Rawley's biggest accomplishment to date in WWE and a sign the company likely has big plans for him over the coming months.
