Johanna Konta Earns Straight-Set Win vs Caroline Wozniacki to Capture Miami Open
Johanna Konta is back in the winner's circle for the second time this season after a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Caroline Wozniacki to capture the 2017 Miami Open championship Saturday.
Konta was terrific from the start, winning 14 of her first 24 first-serve points and took advantage of a lackluster effort from Wozniacki.
The Dane's serve was broken three times in the first set, including an effort with back-to-back double-faults.
Wozniacki did manage to break Konta's serve on two occasions to keep the first set close, but the Brit's third game against the serve gave her a 5-4 lead, and she served out the set after saving two break points.
Per David Law of BBC 5 live, Konta was the first British woman in 32 years to reach the Miami Open final. She didn't let history stop her from making some of her own. The 25-year-old earned the win after one of the match's best rallies.
Earlier in the final game, when things were square at 15-all, Wozniacki again had problems with her serve. Her second serve hit the top of the net on the opposite side of the court to where Konta was waiting to offer a return.
The performance is part of an unfortunate pattern for Wozniacki when she gets to finals this season, per Jose Morgado of the Record Portugal:
Looking at the glass half full, Wozniacki has already reached three finals in seven events so far this year. She just hasn't been able to carry that momentum with her into the big matches.
Konta deserves credit for knocking Wozniacki off her game. This is her second singles title of the season after previously winning the Apia International Sydney in January, and it will give her a nice bump in the world rankings, per The Times' Stuart Fraser:
This tournament was a terrific challenge for Konta, who had to defeat three players ranked in the top 12, including Simona Halep and Venus Williams. She needed a strong bounce-back after losing in the third round at the BNP Paribas Open.
With the French Open still seven weeks away, Konta has time to fine-tune her game as she looks to improve upon her run to the semifinals at the Australian Open in 2016.
Post-Match Reaction
Konta was so happy about the win she even took time after the match to single out the crowd in Miami during the tournament.
"Thank you so much to the crowd," Konta said, per the BBC. "You guys were incredible through the whole week. Miami is such an energetic city and you guys really bring that to the court. My whole team - thank you so much, we're having a great time working hard and I'm looking forward to continuing to do so."
Wozniacki was gracious in defeat, while also looking for better things to come in her future.
"Jo, you played really well today," Wozniacki said, per Hamish MacKay of the Mirror. "You were the better player and you deserved to win. I'm hoping third time lucky [against Konta]. We'll play another time and I'll try my best to win. I was hoping it would be third final lucky this year, but I’ll have to go for the fourth."
