Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku Reportedly Chelsea's Focus in Summer Transfer Plan

Matt JonesMar 31, 2017

Chelsea are to reportedly focus their summer transfer attentions on signing Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

According to Matt Law and Sam Wallace of the Daily Telegraph, Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata is no longer a primary target for the Blues, with manager Antonio Conte keen to bolster his attack with different personnel.

"Chelsea failed with a bid for Morata last summer and had considered making a renewed move for the Spaniard at the end of this season. Morata has even told friends that he expects to move to Stamford Bridge, but the situations regarding Sanchez and Lukaku have seen Chelsea switch their priorities," the piece continued.

If Chelsea were able to bring the two players in the upcoming window, then it’d be a major coup. As we can see below, the duo have been two of the most dangerous players in the attacking third this season in the Premier League:

According to the report, there is still "some doubt" as to whether Diego Costa will stay at Chelsea beyond this season, and subsequently, Conte is considering a revamp of his forward line.

Sanchez is arguably the more ambitious of the two targets. While the Chile international only has until 2018 to run on his current contract with the Gunners, negotiating with direct and geographical rivals will be troublesome for the Blues.

Nevertheless, in the report, it’s noted, "Chelsea believe they can land Sanchez, who has claimed he wants to remain in London." Bleacher Report UK mocked up the worst fear of Arsenal supporters:

Lukaku might be more attainable. As noted in the piece, the Belgium international has turned down a contract extension at Goodison Park, with the striker said to be keen to play in the UEFA Champions League next season.

With the Toffees down in seventh in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby, that’s unlikely to be the case at Everton next season. It’s reported "insiders" at Goodison are worried Lukaku "has set his heart on a return to Chelsea above all other potential moves."

The 23-year-old was a Blues player before Everton paid £28 million to land him in 2014 after a successful season on loan. Per Squawka Football, Lukaku has done more than enough during his time in England to prove he’s one of the Premier League’s best strikers:

Getting Sanchez would be a massive statement from Chelsea. Not only would they be luring a star man from a rival, they’d be getting their hands on one of the most gifted forwards anywhere in the game. The Arsenal No. 7 is a one-man wrecking ball up top, with his blend of aggression and finesse such a rare balance.

Lukaku wouldn’t be a direct replacement for Costa if the current Chelsea man was to move on. The Everton sharpshooter, despite his hulking frame, isn’t a traditional target man who operates with his back to goal nor is he going to run the channels for 90 minutes nonstop; his currency is goals and taking chances created for him.

Still, given his age and the lift operating alongside classier footballers would give him, Conte could help Lukaku become one of the world’s best centre-forwards.
