'I Don't Know Any of These Guys': Final Four Players React to NCAA Concert Bands

Almost every player still dancing in the NCAA tournament has strong opinions on music. But perhaps only one player's opinions have any professional consequences. Charlie Noebel, a senior walk-on guard who averages 2.2 minutes per game for the Oregon Ducks, moonlights on Tuesdays from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. as DJ UpChuck on KWVA 88.1 FM.

After a friend started a show on the same station, Noebel decided to apply and got the graveyard gig. Although the hours are tough, he says the show doesn't interfere with his basketball responsibilities—and Oregon coach Dana Altman has no issue with his extracurricular activity.

"He thinks it's pretty funny, actually," Noebel says. "I really just wake up and do the show and then go straight back to bed."

Noebel was among the more than a dozen Final Four players that Bleacher Report polled about this year's March Madness Music Festival lineup. Last year's festival in Houston was headlined by a favorite of many players, Kendrick Lamar, as well as notable names in pop and hip-hop like Pitbull, Jason Derulo and Flo Rida. But when shown this year's lineup, most players simply stared blankly at the page. Very few had heard of the headliner, Aerosmith, and almost no one could name tracks from the rest of the lineup, which includes Keith Urban, the Chainsmokers, Grouplove, Capital Cities, Leon Bridges, Blink-182, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats.

Thoughts on the lineup as a whole

Hassani Gravett, South Carolina: I've heard of Aerosmith, but I honestly couldn't name a song by any of these artists. Basketball has a kind of hip-hop culture, so it's surprising that this is the list of artists. We need Migos or Kanye. Maybe some Kendrick [Lamar] or Drake.

Johnathan Williams, Gonzaga: The Chainsmokers is the only group I really listen to. I wish they had like Drake and J. Cole. J. Cole is fire.

Khadim Gueye, South Carolina: I don't know any of these guys. I wish there was somebody I did know.

Tommy Corchiani, South Carolina: I guess this list just shows that the lineup is supposed to appeal to the fans, not the players.

Christian Schmitt, South Carolina: I honestly don't know what the deal is with this lineup. All you need is Drake, Future and Migos, and we'd all be happy.

Zach Collins, Gonzaga: Wow, this [lineup] is nice! I listen to Keith Urban, the Chainsmokers, Capital Cities, Aerosmith, Blink-182 and Macklemore.

Aerosmith

Schmitt, South Carolina: I like Aerosmith actually. "Janie's Got a Gun" is a jam.

Corchiani, South Carolina: I know Aerosmith is an '80s band, but I certainly couldn't name a song.

Evan Hinson, South Carolina: I've definitely heard of Aerosmith, but please don't ask me to name any of their songs.

Aaron Rohlman, North Carolina: My dad listened to a lot of classic rock, so I like Aerosmith. That song "Dream On" is really good.

Collins, Gonzaga: I love that Aerosmith song, I don't know but I think it's called "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

Blink-182

Schmitt, South Carolina: Wow, Blink-182 is still making music together? I did not expect that.

Charlie Noebel, Oregon: I listened to Blink-182 a lot growing up. I love "All the Small Things." I know I like more of their music, but I'm not too good with song names.

Stilman White, North Carolina: Blink-182 is the GOAT for me. I listen to them before every game. They're my favorite band of all time. I can't say enough about how much I like Blink-182. My favorite songs are some of the deep cuts, like "Obvious," "Easy Target," "First Date" and "Stockholm Syndrome."

Nate Britt, North Carolina: I love Blink-182, but old Blink is the best.

The Chainsmokers

Silas Melson, Gonzaga: Oh, the Chainsmokers? [Melson begins singing.] "Baby, pull me closer..."

Britt, North Carolina: I love the Chainsmokers. I think they're on my pregame playlist. It sucks I can't go see them.

Kenny Williams, North Carolina: The Chainsmokers have two pretty good songs, but that doesn't make them special.

Williams, Gonzaga: The Chainsmokers is really the only artist on this whole lineup that I listen to.

Corchiani, South Carolina: The Chainsmokers are really the only group that pops out at me on the list. I've been to one of their concerts—they have some bangers.

Schmitt, South Carolina: Every white girl listens to the Chainsmokers, and I like white girls, so I listen to the Chainsmokers.

Keith Urban

Gravett, South Carolina: He's the country guy, right?

Melson, Gonzaga: I know him, but that's definitely not my type of music.

White, North Carolina: I'm not a big country guy.

Schmitt, South Carolina: I know Keith Urban. I even like some of his songs, like "Blue Ain't Your Color." I know for sure, though, that I'm either the only or one of the only Keith Urban fans in the locker room.

Rohlman, North Carolina: Again, I have a lot of the same tastes in music as my dad. And he hated country.

Noebel, Oregon: I'm a big country fan. I'm pretty sure I'm the only country fan in the locker room. I might go to Stagecoach when this thing is all over.

Killian Tillie, Gonzaga: Macklemore is from Seattle, so we all know him. 

Schmitt, South Carolina: No one in here listens to Macklemore.

Williams, North Carolina: Everyone knows Macklemore, and they're lying if they say they don't.

Noebel, Oregon: I don't really listen to Macklemore, but I do kind of have his haircut.
