LaVar Ball's Antics Spark Divided Opinions Among Parents of UCLA Players

Rob GoldbergMar 27, 2017

There are divided opinions about LaVar Ball nationally, so it's no surprise the same holds true for those more directly involved with UCLA basketball.

According to TMZ, the act wore thin among some parents of other players on the team.

"I would never do what he's doing," one parent said. "He's making it about himself. It's like he's trying to take the spotlight from his sons."

Lonzo Ball was one of the top freshmen in the country this season while leading UCLA to the Sweet 16, and he is one of four finalists for the Naismith Trophy as the top player in college basketball.

His father, LaVar, has used this notoriety to make national headlines, doing everything from promoting his children to saying he would have beaten Michael Jordan in a one-on-one game.

The entertainment factor has led to multiple appearances on ESPN's First Take:

Despite new-found fame, not everyone at UCLA thought he was out of line.

"Was LaVar a distraction? Absolutely not," another parent of a Bruins player told TMZ. "Parents acting like [LaVar] and the way he went about it is nothing new. It's part of the dynamic of athletics."

Whether they like him or not, the team and its supporters better get used to the family being around for some time.

Although Lonzo Ball already announced his intention to enter the NBA draft, LiAngelo Ball is committed for next season, and LaMelo Ball is set to join the team in 2019.
