It didn't take long for an upset to surface on the men's side of the draw as Jeremy Chardy sent Marin Cilic packing in 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 fashion.

According to the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg, the loss represented an extension of Cilic's struggles on American soil:

Chardy, meanwhile, has already doubled his win total from a week ago at Indian Wells after he was bounced in Round 2 by Dominic Thiem. He also broke through against one of the tour's top-ranked players for the first time in a year-and-a-half, as ATP Media Info noted on Twitter:

The Frenchman will now have a chance to add another tally to the win column when he returns to the court against Italian Fabio Fognini—who defeated Joao Sousa on Friday.

Fognini has now won at least two matches in his last three events on tour, and he may be primed for a third victory at the Miami Open since he's 2-0 lifetime against Chardy dating back to their first meeting in 2014.

Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal raced into the third round thanks to a swift 6-3, 6-4 win over Dudi Sela.

As a result, Nadal will square off against Philipp Kohlschreiber with a spot in the fourth round on the line. Kohlschreiber—who needed three sets to defeat American Taylor Fritz on Friday—will try to avenge some demons against a player he simply hasn't been able to solve.

Dating back to their first meeting in 2007, Nadal has gone 13-1 against Kohlschreiber. Nadal has also won their last five matches—including a pair of clashes last season.

When play at the Miami Open was suspended Thursday night due to heavy rain showers, No. 6 seed Garbine Muguruza appeared destined for a first-round exit.

American Christina McHale took the first set 6-0 and had mounted a quick 3-2 lead in the second set to put the Spaniard on the ropes.

However, the ability to rest and recharge overnight evidently did wonders for Muguruza.

Although it wasn't pretty, the 23-year-old stood tall and mounted a two-set comeback to squash McHale's upset bit 0-6, 7-6(6), 6-4, as the WTA documented on Twitter:

Indian Wells champion Elena Vesnina, however, was not quite as fortunate.

Like Muguruza, Vesnina was also afforded a chance to recuperate and put Thursday's woes behind her after she faced match point against Ajla Tomljanovic before the rain arrived.

And even though Vesnina was able to stave off match point when play resumed and break for 4-5, Ajla Tomljanovic ultimately proved stronger as she took home the decisive frame 7-5, via the WTA on Twitter:

One woman who refused to be upset was No. 3 seed Simona Halep—who was able to stave off a charge from Naomi Osaka and book a spot in the third round with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory.

"It's really important that I could win this match today," Halep said after the win, per WTATennis.com"I think it was very, very difficult to play against her in the first match here at the tournament, but I'm really happy. I had no pain, I stayed there two hours, fighting, running all over the place... so it's great."

The WTA provided a look at highlights from Halep's win, complete with additional post-match remarks:

Next up for Halep is a matchup with 21-year-old Anett Kontaveit after she surprisingly dispatched Ekaterina Makarova in three sets.

Kontaveit, who entered the Miami Open with one win to her name all season, will now have a chance to shake up the women's side of the draw further if she can pull off a stunner and force Halep to scramble when they meet in Round 3.
