Georgia Tech-Florida State: Half-Time Thoughts

Zachary OstermanOct 10, 2009

(That picture is not from this game. This game was played at night.)

Mother Nature plays better defense than either of the football teams at Doak Campbell Stadium tonight. She's the only one that's kept either of them out of the endzone for any length of time.

They charge me with talking about Georgia Tech, so I'll leave you with some half-time thoughts on the shootout we've got down in Tallahassee.

  • It's pretty obvious, but Georgia Tech's defense is an absolute sieve right now. Total yards: _____. Passing yards: ____. Christian Ponder tied his career high with three touchdown passes—in the first quarter and a half.
  • I wasn't sold on Corwin Smith as a return man at the beginning of the season, but the freshman has absolutely grown on me. He would have run one back if his blocking could have gotten out of his way in the first quarter.
  • Kudos, as well, to Georgia Tech's coverage units on kickoffs (of which there have been many). Not that it matters when you can't stop the other team's offense...
  • Tech's offense being explosive is great, but they can't keep the defense off the field long enough to rest and just as importantly, adjust. Need to put together a few honest drives.
  • This is turning into a game that will be turned by a turnover (Turned around yet?). Not good for the Jackets, who've struggled with fumbles all year.
  • Can we stop talking about Bobby Bowden's future for two minutes? Just 120 seconds, that's all I ask.
  • I can't even get a read on how these offenses are playing. The defenses are absolutely atrocious.
  • This second half is another good inspection of Georgia Tech's championship credentials. Great teams adjust, great teams don't slack off or weaken. Good teams don't.

Six-hundred and forty six total yards in the first half. I leave you with that.

I'm gonna be losing internet access at half-time, but I'll have a rundown for you tomorrow, plus more reaction.
