Tre'Davious White to Bills: Twitter Reacts as CB Is Selected in 2017 NFL Draft

Alec NathanApr 27, 2017

The LSU Tigers have developed a reputation for annually churning out some of the nation's most polished defensive backs, and Tre'Davious White appears primed to join that esteemed group after the Buffalo Bills made him the 27th pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Over the course of four seasons in Death Valley, White developed into one of the nation's premier cornerbacks. That much became clear during his senior season in 2016, when he posted 35 total tackles, two interceptions and a career-high 14 defended passes.

As if those numbers weren't encouraging enough, White posted some of the top grades in Pro Football Focus' database after his game tape was reviewed:

If there's a knock on White, it's that he's a tad undersized at 5'11'' and 192 pounds. However, his ability to quickly diagnose plays and jump opposing receivers' routes has helped compensate for the absence of an ideal frame.

"I feel like I have some of the best feet in the country," White said at the Senior Bowl, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Zach Berman. "I've won way more battles than I've lost."

It also helps that White is a scheme-versatile presence who can line up in the slot or along the boundary.

"He's tough as nails," Philadelphia Eagles vice president of of player personnel Joe Douglas told Berman. "He plays nickel, he plays outside. He has ball skills. And you can stack his production level up with any cornerback coming out in this draft."

But as is the case with a majority of rookie corners, White isn't a lock to be a Week 1 starter simply because he'll need to adjust to defending stronger and speedier NFL receivers.

However, four years of college experience and an ability to take on slot responsibilities means he should find a way on the field in a meaningful capacity sooner rather than later.

The Bills had to find a new starting cornerback after Stephon Gilmore signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent. Their defensive line is one of the most talented groups in the NFL, especially if Marcell Dareus and Shaq Lawson are able to stay healthy in 2017.

Playing in a division with quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Ryan Tannehill slinging the ball all over the field, its essential to have a deep secondary. White gives Bills head coach Sean McDermott an essential piece to build his secondary around.
