Notre Dame's Brianna Turner Suffered Torn ACL, Will Miss Rest of NCAA Tournament
Notre Dame Fighting Irish star Brianna Turner will be out for the remainder of the NCAA tournament after suffering a torn ACL, the school announced Tuesday (via ESPN.com).
Turner took the news in stride on Twitter:
The injury came during Notre Dame's second-round overtime win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday.
The Fighting Irish will sorely feel Turner's absense. She's the team's leading scorer (15.3 points per game) and rebounder (7.1 rebounds per game). Her 2.46 blocks per game are also 24th in the nation.
The South Bend Tribune's Al Lesar compared losing Turner to Natalie Achonwa's getting hurt in the 2014 Elite Eight. After the Fighting Irish beat the second-seeded Baylor Bears in the regional, they knocked out the Maryland Terrapins in the national semifinals but lost to the Connecticut Huskies in the title game.
Notre Dame's Sweet 16 opponent, the Ohio State Buckeyes, has injury problems of its own, with Stephanie Mavunga suffering from a foot issue.
Should the Fighting Irish meet the Stanford Cardinal in the Elite Eight, though, they could run into trouble. Cardinal senior forward Erica McCall is averaging 14.3 points and 8.7 boards a game. Without Turner opposing her inside, she could feast on Notre Dame's weakened frontcourt.
