The Authors of Pain defeated DIY and The Revival in a Triple Threat elimination match Saturday at NXT TakeOver: Orlando to retain the NXT Tag Team Championships.

The WWE had also announced prior to the match that the champions would be holding newly designed tag team title belts:

The three teams in Saturday's bout have dominated NXT's tag team division for the better part of a year, which prompted NXT general manager William Regal to create a match that would determine the superior tandem once and for all.

Akam and Rezar entered TakeOver on a major roll, as they defeated Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio to become NXT tag team champions for the first time.

Under the tutelage of WWE Hall of Famer Paul Ellering, the Authors of Pain burst onto the scene and became one of the most destructive forces NXT has ever seen.

The team quickly climbed the ladder and established itself as a title contender after winning the second annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic over TM-61 at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

That propelled Akam and Rezar to a championship triumph over DIY, and as pointed out by Ellering, they remained undefeated heading into NXT TakeOver: Orlando:

Gargano and Ciampa pushed the duo to the limit in that San Antonio clash, and they did so again in a title rematch on NXT programming, but it was interrupted when Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson interfered, thus costing DIY a chance to become a two-time titlist.

Despite having two match-of-the-year contenders against DIY in 2016, The Revival was left off the NXT TakeOver: San Antonio card, which was a decision that didn't sit well with the team.

The snub prompted Wilder and Dawson to push themselves into the title conversation by force, but since they robbed DIY of a fair rematch, both teams were given an opportunity to dethrone the AOP.

Since the emergence of teams such as Enzo Amore and Big Cass and American Alpha, the tag team division has been among NXT's biggest attractions.

Standing out on a card headlined by Bobby Roode vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka vs. Ember Moon was a tall task, but the Authors of Pain, DIY and The Revival put together an excellent match that furthered the reputation of tag team wrestling in NXT.

By virtue of AOP's victory, a main-roster call-up could soon be in the cards for The Revival, DIY or perhaps even both teams.

Regardless of what the future holds for them, it is difficult to imagine a team capable of knocking off the Authors of Pain emerging any time soon.
