John Ross to Bengals: Twitter Reacts as Bengals Draft 40-Yard-Dash Record Holder
The Cincinnati Bengals pulled off a shocker by drafting wide receiver John Ross with the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
Here's a look at his record-breaking run back in early March from the NFL Network:
Amazingly, the NFL passed along his comments afterward, and he felt there was more in the tank:
After the Bengals added Ross, there was plenty of reaction from the Internet:
Ross' elite speed is undoubtedly his most valuable asset. He's the type of player who's going to require opposing cornerbacks to get constant safety help over the top. Any time he's one-on-one on the outside he's a threat to make a game-changing play.
The 22-year-old California native is not a one-dimensional player, though. He handled a high-volume role in his final season with the Huskies. He worked all sections of the field en route to catching 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns.
His route-running ability will need to become more crisp, especially since he'll be trying to find space between two defenders so often. It's also fair to wonder whether his 5'11'', 188-pound frame can handle the punishment of a 16-game NFL campaign.
That said, Ross' skill set is impossible to ignore. The phrase has become cliche over the years, but it's based in truth: you can't teach that type of speed. And that's why his run at the combine was crucial to solidify his draft stock.
It will likely take a couple of years of development to polish his all-around game enough to handle a No. 1 receiver role. But, while he's learning the finer points of the game, he'll still be making big plays.
In the short term, Ross will continue his recovery from shoulder surgery on a torn labrum. The wideout underwent the procedure following the combine and the Huskies pro day. He was happy to wrap up the draft process quickly, per Nick Shook of NFL.com.
"Recovery for my shoulder. Take it easy. Get down the mental side more and just get ready for the draft," Ross said. "I'm glad this is all over. Now I can focus on that."
His history of ailments, which includes missing the entire 2015 season due to a knee injury, does bring more risk into the equation with this pick. Yet, he's also got the potential to become a major weapon, and that upside is why they made the investment.
Ross is the type of selection that's going to bring a lot of hype with him to the Bengals. Players with his type of game-changing explosiveness and long-term potential are rare, but expectations should be kept within reason during his rookie campaign.
He also offers the Bengals an insurance policy after wide receiver A.J. Green was limited to 10 games last season and tight end Tyler Eifert missed half of the 2016 campaign.
He'll likely be given every opportunity to win a starting job during training camp, or at least compete for a spot with Brandon LaFell, but Cincinnati probably won't lean too heavily on him early on if those other weapons can stay healthy.
