Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Romelu Lukaku and Bernardo Silva

Matt JonesMar 19, 2017

Chelsea are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku this summer should the Toffees decide to cash in.

According to Rob Draper of the Mail on Sunday, the Blues hierarchy is ready to back Antonio Conte with some serious money in the upcoming window. With Diego Costa's position at Stamford Bridge said to be far from secure, Lukaku is reportedly high on the agenda in west London.

While Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are also said to be keen on the 23-year-old, Draper added that Everton have yet to give up hope of convincing their star forward to stay.

"It is understood that talks remain ongoing, and Everton still believe that he could sign an extension to his deal," added Draper. "That said, Chelsea will be keen to enable a deal this summer, with the uncertainty surrounding Costa last January, when a move to China looked possible a major factor."

As noted, Lukaku recently opted not to sign a new deal at Goodison Park, sparking a frenzy of transfer speculation. These numbers from OptaJoe show why:

Indeed, with 21 goals in the Premier League this term, the striker is enjoying the finest season of his career and is on course to win the Golden Boot in English football's top flight.

Lukaku was at his clinical best against Hull City on Saturday as Everton ran out 4-0 winners. The Belgian set up Enner Valencia for the second goal of the day before netting twice in injury time. It's easy to see why the Blues, United and PSG would be interested.

While Lukaku wouldn't be a stylistic replacement for Costa, in terms of goalscoring, he would definitely fill a void if the Spain international were to move on. Having left the Blues for Everton permanently in 2014, the striker may also feel as though he has something to prove at Stamford Bridge second time around.

Chelsea Tracking Monaco Duo

According to Steve Stammers of the Daily Mirror, Chelsea have been keeping tabs on AS Monaco pair Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy with a view to a summer swoop.

The two men have been key to Monaco's exceptional form this campaign, and it's suggested they caught Conte's eye after they helped eliminate Manchester City from the UEFA Champions League.

Silva has been pulling the strings for Monaco in the final third this season with his close control and incisive passing. Portuguese football journalist Tom Kundert recently hailed the ability of the playmaker, who has six goals and seven assists in Ligue 1 this season:

While the Portugal international delicately unpicks opposition defences with his sublime technical ability, Mendy is a lot less subtle in his bursts forward.

The left-back is like an express train on the flank. While his final ball can be erratic, Mendy's power, energy and defensive determination would make him a fine addition to Conte's squad. Per Kristan Heneage of ESPN FC, he's made rapid progress as of late:

According to Stammers, Chelsea would be able to land the pair for around £40 million—Silva for £28 million and Mendy for £12 million—although that seems too low for two of European football's rising stars.

Still, if Chelsea could get them in, they'd be fantastic additions. Silva would add another attacking dimension in the final third alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Pedro, while Mendy would offer excellent competition to Marcos Alonso at left wing-back.
