Logano, who won the Can-Am 500 at Phoenix last November, saved his tires by taking fewer runs during the first two rounds, and the strategy paid off. And he needed every bit of that strong final run to edge Blaney by less than a tenth of a second.
He celebrated the qualifying victory on social media:
"Pole at @PhoenixRaceway!!!!
— Joey Logano (@joeylogano) March 18, 2017"
Blaney will join him on the front row. The Wood Brothers Racing rising star has put together a promising start to the 2017 season with a pair of early top-10 finishes at Daytona and Las Vegas. He's in position to keep the positive vibes alive this week.
Chris Knight of Catchfence provided reaction from the driver of the No. 21 car after the qualifying effort:
Surprisingly, Kevin Harvick got eliminated in the second round of qualifying. The Stewart-Haas Racing star has been dominant in the Camping World 500 with four career victories, including three consecutive dating back to 2014.
Jordan McAbee of Fantasy Racing Online believes it's a sign of things to come:
Yet, it's impossible to look past Harvick's success in this race. No other active driver has won it more than once—Jeff Gordon won it twice prior to retiring—so it will be interesting to see whether he can come from to the middle of the pack to extend his winning streak to four years.
Logano, Earnhardt Jr. and Keselowski figure to represent the other top contenders Sunday afternoon, but nobody should be surprised if the No. 4 machine finds a way to capture the checkered flag once again.
