Recap

Upsets weren't limited to the NCAA hardwood Thursday.

In the day's first quarterfinal showdown, No. 28 seed Kristina Mladenovic pulled off a stunner when she took down the 13th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki despite dropping the first set.

Although she could have crumbled after ceding the opening frame to the entrenched Wozniacki, Mladenovic showed impressive mental fortitude when she bounced back and stood tall in the second-set tiebreaker to force a decisive stanza.

"I was just fighting mentally to be close with her at the scoreboard, and eventually I got my chances," Mladenovic said of the match's turning points, per WTATennis.com. "And I think I played really well the tie-break."

At that point, all the momentum was on her side.

Mladenovic hunkered down, and she took the final set in commanding 6-2 fashion to advance to the semifinals.

The WTA's official Twitter account offered a look at match point:

"At the end of the day I tried my hardest, and that's all I can do," Wozniacki said, per the tournament's official Twitter account

With a win in hand, Mladenovic will now square off against Elena Vesnina, who knocked off Williams in the day's final women's quarterfinal.

Vesnina needed three sets to capture her semifinal berth, but a win buoyed by some stellar shot-making put her in a favorable spot to advance to the finals, as the WTA documented on Twitter:

According to WTA.comVesnina is 2-0 all-time against Mladenovic, with the most recent win coming three years ago in New Zealand. It should also be noted both of Vesnina's wins over Mladenovic have come in straight sets, meaning the French challenger will have to come up with one of her finest efforts of the season to buck that trend.

On the men's side, Pablo Carreno Busta etched out a spot in the semifinals with a three-set win over Pablo Cuevas.

Beyond cementing a place among the final four players on the men's side, Carreno Busta was also able to avenge a recent loss to Cuevas. The two met previously at the ATP Brasil Open, and it was Cuevas who triumphed in straight sets during third-round play.

"It's an amazing feeling," Carreno Busta said, per ATPWorldTour.com. "It's my first time in the semifinal in a Masters 1000. This tournament is one of the best tournaments in the year and maybe one of the tougher, because all the people is playing here. So I think it's a really great result for me."

But now that the Spaniard is moving on, he will get a shot at Wawrinka with a spot in the Indian Wells finals on the line, as ATP's Tennis TV documented

Speaking of Wawrinka, the tournament's No. 3 seed needed two hours and 31 minutes to slip past Dominic Thiem in what proved to be a three-set thriller that was determined by a tiebreaker.

Thanks to his resilience, the Swiss stud will now enter the semifinals eyeing a trip to the championship tilt a year after he was bounced in Round 4 by David Goffin.

And while his legs may be a bit heavy following Thursday's lengthy proceedings, Wawrinka owns a 2-0 record against Carreno Busta, including a 2016 win in Geneva.
