Romelu Lukaku Reportedly Told Everton He Will Not Sign New Contract

Rob BlanchetteMar 14, 2017

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has reportedly told the Toffees he will not sign a new deal to remain at Goodison Park because of his ambitions to play in the UEFA Champions League.

Greg O'Keeffe of the Liverpool Echo reported on Tuesday that the Belgium international intends to seek out a new challenge in the near future.

Recently, the attacker's agent, Mino Raiola, had "insisted" Lukaku will remain on Merseyside and sign a new deal, according to O'Keeffe. Everton had expected the player to pledge his loyalty to the club and are reportedly surprised by his decision.

According to O'Keeffe, his choice is not based on money.

The striker recently told Play Sports (via football journalist Kristoff Terreur) he has no deal in place with Everton:

Lukaku has blossomed under the coaching of Ronald Koeman, and his consistency in front of goal has improved this term.

The Belgian has hit 19 goals and provided five assists in the Premier League this season, according to WhoScored.com.

The player is central to Everton's current form and will not be easily replaced if he asks to leave in the summer.
