Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid Rumours Discussed by Diego Costa

Tom SunderlandMar 14, 2017

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has said team-mates Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois would "have to think about" a move if Los Blancos came calling for their signatures.

Following Monday evening's 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United, Costa spoke to Spanish radio programme El Partidazo (h/t ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan) and said:

"

If Real Madrid were to sign Hazard and Courtois, poor Chelsea! Hazard is happy here, but we all know that when teams like that knock on your door you have to think about it. He is very calm, he is very much loved here. He is a top player and I would be happy if he stays.

Real Madrid want the best goalkeepers and Courtois is one of them. Thibaut has a contract here and it would be a pity if he left.

Thibaut loves Spain, his family lives there. He is happy here but you never know.

Costa addressed the Spanish media as a player whose own future at Stamford Bridge is somewhat uncertain, and he did little to discourage Spanish suitors from moving for both Hazard and Courtois.

The Daily Star (h/t Joe Short of the Daily Express) reported in January that Costa could head back to former club Atletico Madrid, while the Telegraph's Matt Law has reported the striker is "likely to leave" Chelsea this summer.

Likewise, Courtois' link to Real seems obvious since confidence in their own goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, slipped this season, and Hazard has previously been reported as a potential long-term successor to Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, Los Merengues' chances of landing Courtois—who played alongside Costa while on loan at Atletico—were hit after the Belgium No. 1 said that he's happy in west London following Monday's result, per Goal's Nizaar Kinsella:

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte may indeed prefer if talismanic frontman Costa kept his focus on the pitch instead of speculating upon tomorrow's transfer dealings, especially when they include the Blues' biggest stars.

Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney also noted Courtois may not have been the only goalkeeping target for Real at Monday's meeting, with United stopper David De Gea recently reported as one by the Mirror's Neil Moxley:

That being said, Costa's comments regarding Courtois' family living in Spain could be particularly interesting, and Jose Felix Diaz of Spanish daily Marca wrote in December that the Belgian was destined for a return to Madrid.

Sanctioning a move for wing wizard Hazard is the more difficult task for Real, however, although Squawka's Greg Johnson dismissed the notion he makes the Blues something of a one-man band:

Costa's comments have to be taken with a pinch of salt as the player is no authority on where his team-mates will end up, but his comments offer a unique honesty in regards to current transfer rumours.

The Spain international's words suggest he, Hazard and Courtois are aware of the speculation surrounding their situations, the only question being as to which of the Chelsea stars will be acting upon the gossip this summer.
