Eden Hazard Says Chelsea Will Be 'Like PSG' If They Don't Win Premier League

Matt JonesMar 13, 2017

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard believes his team would be "like Paris Saint-Germain" if they were to let their grip slip on the Premier League title now.

The Ligue 1 side saw a 4-0 advantage evaporate at the Camp Nou last week, as Barcelona stormed to a dramatic 6-1 win to book their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Hazard, speaking to Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph, said that collapse should serve as a warning to the Blues.

"I think if we don't win the title this season it's something like PSG; the same feeling," said the forward. "Because, you know, you win 4-0 at home and then you think that you can go through. If we don't win the title this season it will be something of the same feeling because we have the opportunity to win so we have to."

Chelsea are in a position of control in the race for the Premier League. A stunning run of form has seen them build a 10-point gap at the summit with just 11 games left to play. As Hazard noted, it'd take an incredible turn of events for the Blues not to see it through.

A change in system has inspired their scintillating run, and manager Antonio Conte deserves great credit for the switch to 3-4-3.

Paul Brown of Squawka feels as though the Italian has been the difference-maker:

Still, as Hazard pointed out, sometimes remarkable things do happen in football. Indeed, with Barcelona needing three goals with three minutes to play at the Camp Nou, nobody would have anticipated them progressing to the last eight of the competition.

It was also an insight into how crucial momentum can be in sport. So if Chelsea were to suffer a couple of disappointing results back-to-back, confidence could potentially be shot and the chasers could be emboldened.

Teams have made up ground late on before, too. In the 2011-12 season, Manchester United led local rivals Manchester City by eight points in April, although they were still reeled in. In 2003, it was United doing the chasing, overhauling an eight-point gap to Arsenal from early March to finish top.

With players like Hazard in such brilliant form, it's difficult to see this group of Chelsea players taking their foot off the pedal, though.

Bleacher Report UK's Sam Tighe feels as though he has been the standout player in his position in the top flight this term:

Teams have slacked off with such a significant advantage in the past, although Conte doesn't strike as the kind of coach who will allow any kind of drop in energy from his team. The Italian has been abuzz with vigour on the sidelines, and it's clear from his post-match celebrations just how crucial he thinks every win is.

If Chelsea were to lose it from here, it wouldn't be quite as sensational a slip as PSG's in Catalonia. But it's a reminder that football can conjure moments of unmatched drama. And for the high flying Blues, it's a reminder that may have come at the perfect time.
