Karen Khachanov was one of the day's big winners on the men's side thanks to a straight-set victory over Tommy Robredo.
Khachanov, 20, was appearing in his first ATP Masters 1000 event, and he looked unfazed as he came out of the gates focused and firing on all cylinders.
And although he fell behind for portions of the second set, a resilient demeanor allowed the 20-year-old to squash Robredo's hopes of a third set and solidify a spot in the second round.
"It feels great," he said after the win, per ATPWorldTour.com. "It's my first time here in Indian Wells. I've heard a lot about this tournament and I'm really happy that I could get through to the second round. Today I had to be ready from the first point, concentrate 100 percent and play my game."
Paolo Lorenzi also impressed in straight-set fashion when he dispatched Robin Haase 6-4, 6-3 to set up a date against Stan Wawrinka in the second round.
Wawrinka and Lorenzi have met twice in the past, and the Swiss stud emerged victorious on both occasions.
Based on that history and his status as one of the game's premier forces, Wawrinka should be heavily favored to cruise into the third round.
Women's Draw
| Irina Falconi vs. Jelena Jankovic | Jankovic 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 |
| Donna Vekic vs. Alison Riske | Vekic 6-3, 7-6 |
| Andrea Petkovic vs. Vania King | Petkovic 6-0, 2-0 (retired) |
| Lauren Davis vs. Viktorija Golubic | Davis 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 |
| Shelby Rogers vs. Jennifer Brady | Rogers 6-4, 7-6 |
| Varvara Lepchenko vs. Yaroslava Shvedova | Lepchenko 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 |
| Ekaterina Makarova vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo | Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 6-2 |
| Mona Barthel vs. Katerina Siniakova | Siniakova 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 |
| Lesya Tsurenko vs. Peng Shuai | Shuai 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 |
| Oceane Dodin vs. Pauline Parmentier | Parmentier 6-2, 6-4 |
| Risa Ozaki vs. Naomi Osaka | Osaka 6-4, 6-2 |
| Magda Linette vs. Taylor Townsend | Linette 6-4, 6-2 |
| Lucie Safarova vs. Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino | Safarova 6-3, 6-2 |
| Julia Goerges vs. Ajla Tomljanovic | Goerges 7-5, 6-2 |
| Eugenie Bouchard vs. Annika Beck | Beck 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 |
As far as first-round upsets go, Annika Beck's three-set win over Eugenie Bouchard was significant.
Beck—who lost to Bouchard in the first round at last year's Connecticut Open—didn't start in her finest form, but she closed with laser focus and responded to a 3-6 first-set defeat with consecutive 6-2 victories to put the Canadian away.
The WTA on Twitter offered a look at match point:
WTA Insider provided a final statistical breakdown, which highlighted just how sloppy Bouchard was in the loss:
Elsewhere, Jelena Jankovic survived a three-set thriller against American Irina Falconi.
Jankovic appeared headed for a resounding win after she won the first set 6-2, but she slipped up in the second frame and was forced to go the distance.
However, Jankovic was able to rebound thanks to impressive resilience as she put Falconi away 6-3 in the final set, as the WTA documented on Twitter:
With one win under her belt, Jankovic will return to the court for a second-round date with Venus Williams.
And while Williams figures to be the favorite after she received a first-round bye and the tournament's No. 12 seed, Jankovic owns a slight 7-6 edge in their all-time series.
In fact, Jankovic won the last meeting between the two when they clashed in Hong Kong two years ago and has triumphed in two of their last three matches overall.
Don't be surprised if Jankovic goes three sets again as she eyes a surprise booking in the third round.
