Alvin Williams: Should His Number Be Retired?

Aaron WaddingtonOct 10, 2009

There has been a lot of talk on Alvin Williams in the Raptors world this year ever since he became an assistant coach for the current team following a long, loyal service to the Raptors before his career was cut short by injury.

Alvin Williams evidently loved the Raptors and the fans evidently loved him. When the time came he didn't want to leave but he graciously did so for the good of the team and when he got the chance, in a new form, he came right on back. He was popular and while he was never a superstar like Carter (who we all hate now) or Bosh, he was skilled enough to lead the team to its best record, a record only achieved one other time 3 years ago. Now, as mentioned above, he is an assistant coach and everyone seems to be very happy about it. I suspect that he will probably stay awhile and in one form or another work his way through the Raptors' coaching and/or management system in the years to come.

With all of this in mind, I will ask you, Raptors fans, does Alvin Williams deserve to have his number retired by the Raptors? Yeah, no superstar stats, no title, no lasting impact on the NBA, but he was loyal, something you don't see in pro sports much anymore, he always went out and gave 110%, he was always a team player and now he is trying to impress this on the new Raptors and for all of this he is loved by us all. Personally, I think its less about what kind of numbers you put up or how many titles you win and more about how you serve your team that makes you deserving of such an honour, the first in Raptors history.

He would be the first and personally I think he has done more than enough to deserve it. I want to see that #20 flying high up in those rafters before too long! Do you?
