After a college basketball regular season filled with upsets, the always unpredictable NCAA tournament should bring plenty of surprises in 2017.

It's always tricky to pick a national champion, and the lack of a standout team this year compounds the difficulty.

Here's a look at the full 68-team field; fans can download a copy of this year's bracket at NCAA.com:

The Kansas Jayhawks, Villanova Wildcats and UCLA Bruins occupy the top three spots in the AP Top 25. Those teams, however, are 10th, second and 18th on KenPom.com. While many fans will peg Kansas, Villanova and UCLA to make deep runs in the tournament, they are each vulnerable to a bracket-busting upset.

In the last five years, seven No. 1 seeds have earned Final Four berths, including three in 2015 alone. During the same stretch, five teams seeded seventh or lower have reached the national semifinals.

Until the NBA ditches its minimum-age requirement, parity will continue to increase in college basketball. The constant roster turnover at top programs can cause problems against mid-major teams that have built years of continuity.

The West Virginia Mountaineers certainly don't qualify as a mid-major team, but they have an experienced squad that could make a deep run in March.

The core of this year's group was around when West Virginia reached the Sweet 16 in 2014-15. Jevon Carter leads the way with 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein recently praised the junior guard:

Not only do the Mountaineers force an NCAA-best 20.4 turnovers per game, but they also rank 21st in scoring with 82 points per game. West Virginia's high-pressure style could backfire in the NCAA tournament as it did last year, but nobody will want to face Bob Huggins' team in the Big Dance.

While a second-ever Final Four appearance will likely be a bridge too far, the SMU Mustangs could spring a surprise or two. They rank 11th in adjusted offense and 29th in adjusted defense, per KenPom.com.

Count Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle among SMU's admirers, per Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News:

The Mustangs aren't an aesthetically pleasing team, sitting 144th in scoring with 74.6 points per game, but their slow-paced style can be brutally effective when the team is hitting on all cylinders.

In terms of individual stars, nobody will command a bigger spotlight than Lonzo Ball. The UCLA guard is averaging 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 41 percent from three-point range.

Ball has the confidence and ability to put the Bruins on his back late in games, which he did to help spark an 82-79 upset of then-No. 5 Oregon on Feb. 5.

His father, LaVar, has said Lonzo can be better than NBA star Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors point guard first entered the national conversation during Davidson's Elite Eight run in 2008.

If Ball can provide similar heroics for the Bruins, he'll be further on his way toward building a legacy on par with that of the two-time reigning NBA MVP.
