Bears Rumors: Mike Glennon Reportedly a Free-Agency Target for Chicago

Tim DanielsMar 7, 2017

The Chicago Bears and quarterback Mike Glennon have mutual interest.

Ian Rapoport‏ of the NFL Network reported Tuesday the Bears are expected to make a "major push" for Glennon, who considers Chicago his "preferred spot."

On Wednesday, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report reported other teams interested in Glennon "have backed off," as a deal with the Bears "seems like a foregone conclusion."

The Bears are looking to move on from Jay Cutler under center. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in mid-February the front office had started seeking trade partners. Rapoport added the quarterback is considering retirement as well.

Glennon won't come cheaply, though.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported the 27-year-old NC State product is expected to receive $14-15 million annually. The Jets, Texans, Broncos, Rams and 49ers headline the teams looking to upgrade at QB this offseason. The Bills could join the list if they release Tyrod Taylor.

Meanwhile, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole noted the Bucs offered Glennon $8 million per season to back up Jameis Winston.

In December, Glennon told Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times he's enjoyed his four years with the franchise, but he wanted to see what else was available:

"

I've had a great time here in Tampa, and we'll see what happens. It's exciting. I'm looking forward to an opportunity, but we'll see what happens. It's been great to see the team grow and get better. I've had a great relationship with [head coach] Dirk [Koetter] and Jameis and all the quarterbacks. Dirk's doing a great job here, and we have a close relationship. I'm excited for what's to come, but I'll worry about that when the time comes.

"

Glennon has an 84.6 passer rating through 21 appearances, with 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Depending on what happens with Taylor in Buffalo and the Cowboys' Tony Romo, however, the 6'6'' signal-caller could be considered the best QB on the market this offseason. His stock is also bolstered by a limited group of draftees at the position.

Glennon's biggest key moving forward with the Bears or elsewhere will be improving his accuracy. He completed just 59.4 percent of his throws during his time in Tampa, more than two points below Cutler's career mark.
