Manchester United Transfer News: Gianluigi Donnarumma, David De Gea, Top Rumours

Christopher SimpsonMar 2, 2017

Manchester United will pursue AC Milan rising star Gianluigi Donnarumma in a €50 million (£43.1 million) deal as an "insurance policy" if David De Gea leaves the club for Real Madrid.

That's according to an exclusive from Calciomercato.com, with United having discussed the goalkeeper with his agent, Mino Raiola, who "has been quoted on numerous occasions expressing doubts about" the Rossoneri.

Along with the mooted €50 million fee, the Red Devils might also hand Donnarumma a €3 million (£2.6 million) annual salary.

However, Tuttosport (h/t Goal, via Calciomercato) reported Milan "want to offer Raiola and Donnarumma the same salary...and a percentage of the sale to Raiola," which is what Juventus and Paul Pogba—who is also a client of Raiola's—did.

De Gea is one of the world's best 'keepers, but if he does leave Old Trafford at any point, then Donnarumma would be an outstanding replacement.

The teenager only recently celebrated his 18th birthday, but he has been the Rossoneri's No. 1 goalkeeper for almost two years:

Indeed, as demonstrated by Bleacher Report UK's Adam Digby, Donnarumma has been showcasing his precocious talent since he was a child:

The youngster's assured performances between the sticks have belied his tender years, and he has now made 60 appearances for Milan since replacing Diego Lopez as the club's first-choice goalkeeper in 2015.

He has gone from strength to strength this season, as the below video demonstrates:

As noted by Squawka, Donnarumma's numbers for the campaign are strong even when compared with De Gea's:

Of course, Milan's defence isn't quite as robust as United's, and so Donnarumma is likely facing substantially more shots than the Spaniard. But the Italian's stats are nevertheless impressive, and he even has a full 10 per cent higher distribution accuracy.

De Gea is one of United's most important players, and losing him could be a significant blow to the Red Devils if he moves on.

However, if the club are able to replace him with a player of Donnarumma's calibre and world-class potential, that blow would be immeasurably softened.
