Manchester City Transfer News: Danny Rose Scouted Amid Luke Shaw Rumours

Rory MarsdenMar 2, 2017

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose as a potential summer target, with manager Pep Guardiola eager to add some youth to his back line.

The Spaniard has four full-backs at his disposal who are all over 30—Aleksander Kolarov, Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy.

A significant overhaul is due at the Etihad Stadium, and City are reportedly scouting 26-year-old Rose ahead of a potential big-money move for the England international in the summer, per James Nursey in the Mirror.

Nursey added that Spurs are lining up out-of-favour Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw as a potential replacement for Rose, an indication they fear they could lose one of their key players.

Rose has been brilliant for Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham side so far this season and, along with Kyle Walker, forms arguably the best full-back paring in the Premier League:

He would be a significant upgrade on City's current options on the left side of defence—Kolarov and Clichy, both 31—and would likely nail down the role for the foreseeable future.

Rose also has the tactical flexibility to be a huge asset for Guardiola in a multitude of systems.

He is defensively solid enough to perform as a conventional left-back but also boasts the attacking intent and work rate to function as a wing-back should he need to.

Per the Press Association's Liam Blackburn, Guardiola has previously talked up both Rose and Walker:

A pursuit of Rose, at least, is likely from City in the summer. But only a huge fee would tempt Spurs into selling—Rose only signed a new deal at White Hart Lane to 2021 in September—and even then it may be an impossible transfer to pull off.

According to Matt Hughes in The Times, both Rose and Walker "are Guardiola players in almost every respect," but the pair are on a list of players Spurs "will not sell at any price for at least two seasons."

If that is indeed the case, then City's chances of signing Rose at the end of the season are close to nil, unless something changes at White Hart Lane.
