According to Aaron Leming of BearReport.com, original projections forecast the cap would hit over $168 million.

Per NFL.com, the NFL's salary cap has increased by $47 million since 2012.

The cap boost will add even more intrigue to a free-agent signing period that will feature some big names even though several top options have been slapped with the franchise tag.

Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, running back Adrian Peterson and tight end Martellus Bennett are among the biggest prizes teams will vie for.
