Luis Scola Released by Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets got even younger Monday, as they placed veteran forward Luis Scola on waivers.

In announcing the move, the Nets released the following statement from general manager Sean Marks about allowing Scola to play for a contender down the stretch:

The Nets currently have the NBA's worst record at 9-49.

The 36-year-old Scola is in the midst of his 10th NBA season after previous stints with the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors.

He has appeared in just 36 games for the Nets this season and is averaging career lows with 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.

The Argentina native started 76 games for the Raptors last season and served primarily as a starter for his first six years in the league.

Scola was at his best in five seasons with the Rockets, as he put up 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during his tenure with the team.

While Scola is best deployed as a bench player at this point in his career, he could be a valuable asset to a playoff contender with 48 career postseason games to his credit.

Several high-profile veterans have hit the open market since the trade deadline. While Scola may fly under the radar in comparison, he provides quality frontcourt depth.

As Brooklyn builds toward the future, Scola's departure will allow more playing time for younger power forward options, such as the newly acquired Andrew Nicholson.
