Luke Shaw Reportedly Eyes Manchester United Exit Due to Jose Mourinho Treatment

Chris LakerFeb 27, 2017

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw will reportedly look to quit the club in the summer as he is frustrated at not being a part of manager Jose Mourinho's first-team plans.

The left-back suffered another setback in his Old Trafford career when he was left out of the squad that beat Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday.

Per Greg Stobart of Squawka, Shaw believes Mourinho has already decided he does not want him and is now eyeing up an exit at the end of the season.

The report added that the former Southampton defender feels he has been unfairly targeted by Mourinho since the Portuguese arrived at the United helm last summer.

Shaw enjoyed a promising opening to the season but suffered a groin injury in November 2016 that saw him miss 14 matches. He has since failed to break back into the United reckoning despite being fit and available.

And Mourinho sent a damning message to the England international when asked why he wasn't in his lineup for what was effectively a dead-rubber Europa League second-leg match against Saint-Etienne on Feb. 22.

Per Stuart Mathieson of the Mirror, the United boss explained:

"

Why has Luke Shaw stayed behind in Manchester? Because I am playing with Daley Blind, with Marcos Rojo, with Matteo Darmian and all of them are playing the way I like a full-back to play.

Luke has to wait for his chance. He has to work better and better knowing that I give nothing for free.

When I give something to the players it's expensive for them, it's not cheap it is expensive they have to work really hard every day. They have to play well, so he has to wait. In this moment he is behind the others.

"

Shaw moved to Old Trafford from Southampton for £27 million in 2015 but has struggled with injuries—a problem that has curtailed a promising career.

At the start of the current campaign, the England international's impressive displays showed he can be a key player for seasons to come if his body holds up.

A pacy full-back with positive attacking intent and good technical ability, Shaw has only been able to show United fans glimpses of his talent. But at just 21 years old, there is arguably plenty more to come from a player capped six times at international level.

Mourinho's approach can perhaps be viewed as one designed to coach a better tactical focus and application into Shaw's game. Indeed, despite a player's natural ability, it arguably only gets them so far under the Portuguese boss, who is a keen advocate of a hardworking team ethic.

There would likely be no shortage of suitors for Shaw should United opt to make him available for transfer in the summer.

However, there is likely to be a big question mark over whether teams would be prepared to stump up anywhere near the £27 million figure United paid on a player with such a poor history of fitness.
