Trevor Siemian Expects to Be Ready for Broncos OTAs After Shoulder Surgery

Adam WellsFeb 25, 2017

Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian is moving closer to a return to football activities after having offseason shoulder surgery.

In an interview with Troy Renck of ABC 7 in Denver, Siemian said he expects to be ready for Denver's organized team activities.

"I am out of the sling and everything is going really well so far," he said. "I should be good for OTAs but we'll see. I'll touch base with the doc at the end of March and see how I am doing."

Siemian had what was described as "minor and elective" surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder on January 5 after suffering a sprained joint earlier in the season, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post.

The 24-year-old Siemian started the 2016 season as one of the most surprising draft success stories. He was the 250th overall pick out of Northwestern in 2015 and took over for Peyton Manning as the Broncos' starting quarterback after Manning retired before the 2016 season.

In 14 games as Denver's starter, Siemian showed promise with 3,401 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With the Broncos bringing in new head coach Vance Joseph after Gary Kubiak retired due to health concerns, Siemian will likely have to go through the process of earning the starting job all over again.

"I can't wait to pick up the new scheme," Siemian told Renck. "And I can't wait for football to come back around."

The presence of Paxton Lynch complicates matters for Siemian, since presumably the Broncos will want to get a look at Lynch as the full-time starter at some point since he was a first-round pick in 2016.

Regardless of what happens with the Broncos' decision regarding the starting quarterback in 2017, Siemian's seamless recovery from shoulder surgery is an encouraging sign and will give Joseph's coaching staff a lot to think about through OTAs and training camp this summer.
