Barcelona Transfer News: Serge Aurier Reportedly Eyed, Latest Blaugrana Rumours

Tom SunderlandFeb 24, 2017

Barcelona reportedly remain interested in a move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier following his fall from the club's starting XI. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker is another right-back on the Blaugrana's radar.

A long-term injury to Aleix Vidal has pushed Barcelona back into the transfer market as they seek right-back recruits, and ESPN FC's Jonathan Johnson cited French daily L'Equipe as the source of the Aurier speculation:

Summer signing Thomas Meunier has superseded Aurier in some fixtures of late, which could ultimately help Barcelona's case in attempting to convince the Ivory Coast international of a move to the Camp Nou.

Goal's Mohammed Ali recently suggested the starting spot under PSG manager Unai Emery belonged to Aurier but admitted Meunier was providing strong competition:

Aurier has recorded three assists in 14 Ligue 1 outings this season and could be seen as the successor to Dani Alves that Barcelona failed to sign last summer, having instead started this season with Sergi Roberto at right-back.

That was before Vidal suffered an ankle injury that is set to keep him sidelined for five months, per Barcelona's official website, which came after Marca's Jason Pettigrove noted his improving form:

While makeshift defender Roberto did a fine job of bringing some stability and playmaking to the right-back role, Aurier would represent a shift back to the swashbuckling performances of former club icon Alves.

The Ivorian's speed makes him a dangerous asset when firing down the flanks, which is a tactic Barcelona might prefer given the strength they boast on the wings.

Another option for the Catalan giants is Spurs and England right-back Walker, according to the London Evening Standard (h/t Sport).

That being said, Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney recently suggested Walker won't be on the move to the Camp Nou:

Sport mentioned both Manchester United and Manchester City were linked with £60 million offers for Walker last year, giving some indication as to how much he might cost if he were to leave White Hart Lane.

However, Barcelona seem unlikely to splash so much cash on a single player, let alone a right-back, meaning their search for a Vidal replacement looks likely to linger on.
