WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, Rumors, News and Preview for Feb. 21

Tom ClarkFeb 21, 2017

WrestleMania 33 has been turned upside down, thanks to SmackDown Live Superstar Randy Orton.

When The Viper announced to the world that he would not challenge Bray Wyatt for the WWE Championship on April 2, fans were left with more questions than answers. That seemed impossible, mostly because Orton's initial alliance with Wyatt was supposedly just a ruse to tear the family down from the inside out.

That's what fans thought, anyway. The problem is that Orton has stayed true to The Eater of Worlds.

As a result, general manager Daniel Bryan booked a Battle Royal for the Feb. 21 program, with the winner becoming the new No. 1 contender to Wyatt's title. Now, the SmackDown Live roster will get a crack at immortality while Orton continues to tow the line for Wyatt.

To WWE's credit, at least the storyline is interesting and unpredictable.

But how far will the company go with The Wyatt Family as it pertains to WrestleMania's main event? Will a new player win the Battle Royal and go on to The Show of Shows? Or could fans see something that would be much bigger for Wyatt's family?

Battle Royal Questions

Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats suggested that Orton's pledge of allegiance to Wyatt is indeed just a swerve that will lead to a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania. Orton could face Wyatt and Luke Harper in an all-Wyatt Family main event.

It may not be an all-Shield main event, but maybe it's the next best thing.

So if Harper wins the Battle Royal on Feb. 21, then he would become the man to face Wyatt at WrestleMania. That leaves Orton as the odd man out, though he would likely find a way to slither back in. Perhaps the destruction of The Wyatt Family is at hand after all.

AJ Styles is booked for the Battle Royal, which means he has a chance to regain his title. But if a match with Shane McMahon materializes instead, then fans may be a bit disappointed. McMahon has no reason to face Styles, so a match would be thrown together seemingly out of nowhere.

Considering the year Styles had in 2016, it's likely not the WrestleMania moment that many believe he deserves.

PWInsider.com's Mike Johnson reported that Kurt Angle's final independent booking will take place on March 3. The Olympic gold medalist and 2017 WWE Hall of Famer will face Cody Rhodes, and fans are likely wondering if Angle will work again in Vince McMahon's company.

If Angle were to be the last entrant in the No.1 Contender's Battle Royal, he would tear the house down. However, he would be stepping over Orton, Harper, Styles, and even John Cena if he won the match and moved on to WrestleMania.

Maybe Angle's in-ring return should happen at another time.

Chasing the Gold

Baron Corbin's attack of Dean Ambrose on Feb. 14 could lead to a match between the two men sooner, rather than later.

The Lone Wolf is believed by many to be the next in line for main event stardom, and he's proved himself over the past several months. The man that was not taken seriously in NXT is now on the rise on SmackDown Live.

The WWE Championship may not be in the cards for Corbin right now, but the intercontinental title could be coming his way soon.

Natalya will face off against Nikki Bella in a Falls Count Anywhere match in what has been a good rivalry thus far. Despite the fact that the two play nice on Total Divas, their feud on SmackDown has gotten over with the WWE faithful.

This may be the last chapter in their story, but at some point, one of them will likely be on deck for a shot at Naomi's SmackDown Women's Championship. The same could be said of Tamina Snuka, who is back and who has apparently aligned herself with Natalya.

That alliance could give The Queen of Harts the edge against Bella.

John Cena's Future

It seems as though Cena is serious about moving on and giving other guys a chance.

Not only did Wyatt pin him in the Elimination Chamber match, but Cena also did the favor for him on the Feb. 14 edition of SmackDown Live. According to Sean Waltman of X-Pac 12360 (h/t Joshua Gagnon of Wrestling Inc), Cena insisted on putting Wyatt over.

Cena's record-tying 16th world championship made the news, but perhaps the real story will come later when he breaks the record. Fans know it's coming at some point. But if Cena continues taking time off, that title win may not happen anytime soon.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Nick Paglino of WrestleZone), Cena will be leaving again after WrestleMania 33. That means his road to April 2 must begin now. Whatever WWE has planned for him will likely start soon, and the Feb. 21 SmackDown Live could be the night when things get moving in the right direction.

Cena could find himself in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania.

If the Battle Royal ends in some type of controversy involving Cena and Styles, then the two could be booked to face Wyatt at WrestleMania. If that happens, then Orton would be left to face Harper, or The Viper could even be included in the title match, making it a Fatal 4-Way.

Cena has earned the right to call his own shots in WWE, and that means anything can happen on the Road to WrestleMania.
