4-Star DT Prospect Tyler Friday Commits to Ohio State over Michigan, Others
Tyler Friday added another big name to Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class Friday, as he announced his commitment to the Buckeyes, according to Cleveland.com's Bill Landis.
Friday, a 4-star defensive tackle, is the No. 86 overall prospect and fourth-ranked defensive tackle in 247Sports' rankings. He is ranked second among players from the state of New Jersey.
Listed at 6'3" and 263 lbs., Friday emerged as a defensive stalwart at New Jersey's Don Bosco Prep School. He was considered an early target of a number of Big Ten schools, including Michigan and Rutgers.
247Sports' predictions made the Wolverines an early favorite, with Rutgers coming in a close second. Alabama, Penn State and Ohio State all made early scholarship offers to Friday as well with the Buckeyes eventually landing him.
Don Bosco assistant TC Sweeney spoke highly of Friday last year.
"Tyler Friday is one of the best athletes to ever play at Don Bosco," Sweeney said, per Gary Phillips of NewJersey.com. "There's really no doubt about it."
Friday has played both sides of the ball for most his collegiate career, starting on both the offensive line and defensive line. Recruiting services have pegged him for the defensive side for his collegiate career, but Sweeney praised his ability to play every down.
"He can do both," Sweeney said. "He started every game for us on the offensive line last year and he's going to start every game this year on the offensive line...we think he's one of the best offensive linemen in the state."
His stature makes him a better fit for the defensive side long term, but Friday's time on offense should help him develop knowledge that will be useful going forward.
Friday is the 23rd player to commit to Ohio State in the 2018 class, and the 20th of four stars or greater.
