New York Jets owner Woody Johnson will be named the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom by President-elect Donald Trump.

Ali Vitali of NBC News confirmed Johnson's role with a transition official.

As for what this means regarding Johnson's day-to-day involvement with the Jets, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk previously reported his brother, Christopher Wold Johnson, will run the team until the end of his tenure as ambassador.

Johnson's appointment under Trump's impending presidency is not a surprise. On Dec. 4, Ian Mohr and Emily Smith of Page Six reported that Johnson was a "leading contender," citing Johnson's serving as vice chairman of Trump's victory committee and hosting fundraisers for the Trump campaign as possible reasons he was being considered for ambassadorship.

President Barack Obama named Pittsburgh Steelers co-owner Dan Rooney as the United States ambassador to Ireland in 2009, a position he held through 2012 before resigning.

The 69-year-old Johnson bought the Jets in January 2000. Under his ownership, the franchise has made six playoff appearances, reaching the AFC Championship Game in 2009 and 2010.
