Danny Woodhead Reportedly Will Sign Contract with Baltimore Ravens

Mike ChiariMar 8, 2017

Versatile running back Danny Woodhead found a new home in free agency, as he will reportedly sign with the Baltimore Ravens, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com on March 8.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune confirmed the news. On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the three-year deal will be worth $8.8 million, with $4.25 million guaranteed.

Woodhead spent the past four seasons with the former San Diego Chargers after stints with the New York Jets and New England Patriots.

The undrafted free agent out of Chadron State appeared in only two games last season, as a torn ACL suffered against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 cost him the remainder of the campaign. Rapoport noted he is now fully healthy, and Gehlken previously said he was well ahead of schedule.

Although the 32-year-old veteran appears to be coming along, major injuries are not a new issue for him at the NFL level.

In 2014, Woodhead missed all but three games due to a broken fibula.

He is productive when healthy, as evidenced by his 336 rushing yards and three touchdowns along with a career-high 80 receptions for 755 yards and six receiving touchdowns in 2015, but the diminutive 5'8", 200-pound back remains a significant injury risk.

Woodhead was a favorite of quarterback Philip Rivers with the Chargers due to his impressive pass-catching ability out of the backfield, and that figures to be his biggest asset with Joe Flacco and the Ravens as well.

While losing Woodhead takes a potentially huge offensive weapon out of the equation for the Bolts, Melvin Gordon's emergence as one of the NFL's premier running backs in 2016 softens the blow.

Woodhead isn't best utilized as a featured back, but if Baltimore deploys him in a Darren Sproles-esque manner, he has a chance to be an important factor in 2017.
