Floyd Mayweather Trolls Conor McGregor by Proclaiming He's the Face of MMA

Brian OswaldJan 12, 2017

You've probably noticed that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor are back at each other in the media.

The most recent round between the two pay-per-view kings of combat sports kicked off with Mayweather declaring he had offered McGregor $15 million for a fight. He dropped that tidbit on ESPN's First Take (h/t Daily Mirror's Martin Domin).

McGregor responded with a low blow via his Twitter account:

So how would Mayweather respond?

By proclaiming, he, and not McGregor, is the face of mixed martial arts. His swipe at McGregor came during a Facebook Live interview with ESPN's Brian Campbell.

Mayweather said, per Jed Meshew from MMA Fighting:

"

I’m not just the face of boxing, I’m the face of mixed martial arts also. And I’m not an MMA fighter but I do support all contact sports. I haven’t seen an MMA fight in a while but anytime I see an MMA fighter that wants to take a picture with me, I’m gonna take a picture with them because they go through a lot. Fighters go through a lot to get to a certain level and MMA fighters go through a lot just like boxers go through a lot.

"

He went on to state he doesn't think McGregor actually wants to fight him:

"

I want to tell everybody this, right now. Conor McGregor, do he want to fight? Absolutely not. I’m trying to see if he really want to fight but we can’t make the fight happen because he’s not his own boss. And I want the world to know this: just a fight, two fights ago, he was [knocks table twice] tapping out. He was just [knocks table twice] quitting.

"

Mayweather vs. McGregor in a boxing ring, or especially in the UFC's Octagon, will never happen. Then again, never say never. At the end of the day, money is what makes the world go 'round.

For now, enjoy (or tune out) these two larger-than-life personalities coming up with new ways to take shots at each other.
