Raw general manager Mick Foley announced Roman Reigns will get a rematch with Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Championship at January's Royal Rumble.
Foley also announced that Chris Jericho will be suspended in a shark cage above the ring, courtesy of WWE Universe:
In a preview of what's to come, Jericho got locked in the cage Monday night.
Foley had to find a way to prevent Jericho from interfering in the Royal Rumble match.
Y2J had a helping hand in Owens retaining his title at Roadblock: End of the Line. Having teased an end of his friendship with the universal champion, Jericho instead delivered a Codebreaker to Owens, which resulted in a disqualification and Owens keeping the belt.
On the Nov. 21 episode of Raw, Foley tried banning Jericho from ringside for a Universal Championship match between Owens and Seth Rollins. Jericho still found a way to be involved in the match:
Theoretically, putting Jericho in a shark cage should preclude him from playing a role in the outcome of Reigns' rematch at Royal Rumble.
Granted, that hasn't stopped devious managers from making their presence felt. At NXT TakeOver: Toronto, Paul Ellering dropped a chain into the ring, which Authors of Pain used to beat TM61 and win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
While the cage is unlikely to make Jericho a non-factor at Royal Rumble, his interference could finally drive a wedge between himself and Owens. Sooner or later, the two are likely to go from friends to rivals, and it would make sense to begin their breakup at Royal Rumble, with the story culminating at WrestleMania 33.
Some might argue that putting Jericho in a shark cage takes the spotlight off Reigns and Owens in what is a big title match. However, it adds a different wrinkle to what might otherwise have been a tedious bout between two wrestlers who have crossed paths numerous times in recent months.
