Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks: Epic Match Proves Women's Title Is Now Equal to Men's

Alfred KonuwaDec 18, 2016

At WWE Roadblock: End of the Line, Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks were set up to steal the show. Raw aired a clever and dramatic video package that used the theme of their match to describe their rivalry—iron sharpens iron.

Despite a heated feud that has resulted in several title changes since the brand extension, Flair and Banks worked together to acknowledge one another as worthy foes in a move that helped sell this match.

"Everyone has one person who they're eternally bound to," said Banks.

"...a person who elevates you to to a whole different level," Flair continued.

The statements could have doubled as either wedding vows or a positive haiku as both competitors talked up their competition. And why not? Throughout the course of this feud, Banks and Flair have become a more high-profile main event than the Universal Championship.

Banks and Flair's Nov. 28 duel for the Raw Women's Championship outperformed Rollins and Owens' Universal Championship match from the week before. Rollins vs. Owens, which was promoted throughout the show, helped Raw amass just 2.772 million viewers in the third hour compared to 3.039 million viewers for Banks and Flair, per Showbuzz Daily (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc).

Flair and Banks continued to be the superior rivalry headed into Roadblock, as Roman Reigns' Universal Championship match against Owens was promoted as a subplot to The New Day's record-breaking WWE Tag Team Championship reign on Raw.

Reigns and Owens' match was just fine, but there was no way it was going to top such an emotionally charged feud that came with one of the more dramatic stipulations in WWE.

This rare Iron Man match was a competitive, compelling match with limited pinfalls. Though it took a while for fans to become fully invested, that's to be expected from a match that is guaranteed to last for at least 30 minutes.

It was the type of match that could have—and should have—main-evented Roadblock with little fuss or unnecessary talk of history. In addition to the Raw Women's Championship, Flair's much-heralded undefeated streak was on the line as well. It was a gift of drama and suspense that just kept on giving.

On paper, several title switches can diminish a championship. But given how both Flair and Banks continue to assert their claims as the best in the division while giving one another props when necessary, the Raw Women's Championship may be the most coveted title on both Raw and in WWE.
