Brock Osweiler Comments on Benching, Tom Savage's Performance vs. Jaguars

Rob GoldbergDec 18, 2016

The Houston Texans finally reached their breaking point with Brock Osweiler Sunday.

The high-priced quarterback was benched in favor of Tom Savage, and the 2014 fourth-round pick responded by leading the Texans to a 21-20 come-from-behind victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After the game, Osweiler admitted his teammate had "played a phenomenal game," per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Savage finished 23-of-36 for 260 passing yards and no turnovers. Osweiler went 6-of-11 for 48 yards and two interceptions before exiting with a 13-0 deficit.

"As a competitor, any time you don't play well of course, there's disappointment," Osweiler added. "You feel like you let them down."

The poor play isn't anything new for the 26-year-old, who now has 14 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions on the season. Per ESPN, his 73.4 quarterback rating entering the day was second-worst in the NFL among qualified players, beating only Ryan Fitzpatrick of the New York Jets.

Pro Football Focus broke down Savage's performance compared to the rest of the year from Osweiler:

This is an even greater disappointment considering the Texans signed the former Denver Broncos player for $72 million over four years this offseason, including $37 million guaranteed. As ESPN Stats & Info noted, that is quite a bit more than Savage, who makes just $300,584 this season.

Houston's fans were happy about the change, providing a standing ovation during the quarterback switch, captured by NFL UK:

It remains to be seen what the team will do at the position next week against the Cincinnati Bengals. Osweiler seemed nonchalant about the possibility of losing his job, noting, "If I start, I start," per Wilson.

The Texans moved to 8-6 with the win and are currently tied for first place with the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South with two games remaining.
