Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Quincy Promes and Frank Acheampong

Christopher SimpsonDec 15, 2016

Liverpool will reportedly fail to prise Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow in January, as he's set to stay and help his side recruit close friend and compatriot Memphis Depay from Manchester United.

Agent Alexey Safonov said, per reports in the Russian press (h/t Joe Rimmer of the Liverpool Echo), "According to my information, the Dutch want to help Spartak win the title, and Depay is ready to come to Moscow."

Promes is said to be attempting to persuade Depay to link up with him in January, which could preclude him from leaving the club in the same month.

The pair evidently share a close friendship, as seen in the United winger's Twitter feed:

Promes has caught the eye in the Russian Premier League this season with six goals and seven assists in 14 appearances.

Here are some of the pacy winger's highlights:

The Dutchman can play across the front three but typically operates from the flanks, where he's netted 37 goals for Spartak in 78 appearances.

Promes is also highly creative, which he's demonstrated with the Netherlands national side this year, per OptaJohan:

With the excellent form of Divock Origi and Adam Lallana—not to mention that of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho—the Reds aren't lacking for firepower, but aside from Mane, there's little natural width in the side, something Promes could provide.

Russian football journalist Artur Petrosyan believes he would be a good fit at Anfield but isn't likely to move in January:

Depay does seem likely to leave United in January, but even if he doesn't join Spartak, it seems Promes will stay put regardless as he targets the Russian title—his side are currently top of the table by five points.

His capture could be worth revisiting in the summer, though Liverpool are likely to face plenty of competition for his signature.

Meanwhile, according to the Sun's Steve Goodman, the Reds are reportedly interested in signing Anderlecht left-back Frank Acheampong, whom they have scouted on numerous occasions.

AS Saint-Etienne's French defender Kevin Malcuit (R) and RSC Anderlecht's Ghanian forward Frank Acheampong (L) vie for the ball during the UEFA Europa League football match between RSCA Anderlecht and AS Saint-Etienne at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium

The 23-year-old has been in outstanding form this season, and his forays upfield have rewarded him with a goal and five assists.

Left-back is perhaps Liverpool's weakest position, with James Milner covering there as a makeshift defender this season. The versatile Englishman has filled in admirably, but it's not a solution that will work long-term or against top opponents—a new left-back should be a priority.

Acheampong is reportedly valued at just £6 million. If Liverpool can snap him up in January, he may well prove to be a shrewd purchase.
