Louisville LBs James Hearns, Henry Famurewa Shot Near Campus, Expected to Be OK
Louisville linebackers James Hearns and Henry Famurewa were shot near the school's campus on Dec. 11 morning but did not sustain life-threatening injuries, ESPN.com's Andrea Adelson reported on Dec. 12.
The pair were among three people shot in the incident.
Yusuf Shakir, Hearns' coach at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida, said Hearns revealed to him he was shot in the elbow but that "he's OK," according to USA Today, adding: "He knows it could have been a lot worse."
"If you go through something like that, you're happy to be alive," Shakir said.
On Wednesday, Justin Sayers and Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal reported the three people who were shot told police they did not know the shooter but could identify him. A police report indicated the shooting took place after a "pushing, shoving match" took place inside a party and turned into a fight outside in which someone had a gun.
On Dec. 12, Louisville sophomore Jayvon Smith told Tabnie Dozier of WHAS11 that students had gathered two doors down from his house and were celebrating Lamar Jackson's Heisman Trophy win. He said students then came knocking on his door during the incident to tell him a shooting was taking place.
Hearns told Shakir the gathering was at a track athlete's home.
"Some local guys decided to crash the party," Shakir told USA Today. "One of the guys started shooting into the crowd."
