Odell Beckham Jr. Fined for Verbal Abuse Toward Refs: Latest Details, Reaction

Adam WellsDec 9, 2016

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has been fined by the NFL for his excessive use of profanity and verbal abuse directed toward an official in Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, Beckham's fine amounted to $12,154 and was not for his postgame comments regarding the officiating crew.

Following the Giants' 24-14 loss against the Steelers last Sunday, Beckham alleged one of the officials said to "get out of my face" when he sought an answer following an offensive pass interference penalty against him, per James Kratch of NJ.com.

Referee Terry McAulay's crew worked the game, and McAulay also worked the 2015 penalty-laden matchup between the Giants and Carolina Panthers in which Beckham was flagged four times, including three 15-yard personal-foul penalties.

“I don't really think we should have this crew anymore with the past history and everything that’s gone on,” Beckham said, per Bill Pennington of the New York Times.

Beckham wasn't done discussing the game following Wednesday's practice, invoking the name of a blind musician to further his point, per USA Today'Lorenzo Reyes:

"

Everybody knows what’s going on on the field. Everybody could see it. (Blind musician) Stevie Wonder could see it. It is what it is. You can’t do anything about it. There’s no point. I shouldn’t even have brought it up because it’s always a lose-lose situation bringing something up. Either you’re speaking out on it and you’re trying to defend yourself or the other way around, you’re complaining.

"

The NFL has gotten a lot of money from Beckham this season. The star wide receiver was previously fined $24,309 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in a game against the Minnesota Vikings in October and again two weeks later for removing his helmet after scoring a touchdown.

Beckham was also fined $36,000 for an illegal block against New Orleans Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro in Week 2.

The Giants have a crucial matchup at home Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys as they look to keep their slim division titles hopes alive and extend their lead in the wild-card race.
