Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay Eyed by Roma Amid Everton Rumours

Rory MarsdenDec 7, 2016

Roma have emerged as reported suitors for out-of-favour Manchester United winger Memphis Depay, who is expected to depart Old Trafford in January.

According to Samuel Luckhurst in the Manchester Evening News, United manager Mourinho will let Memphis depart next month, and Serie A giants Roma are "keen on signing him," while Everton are "open admirers" of the Dutch youngster.

The 22-year-old's combined first-team action this season in the UEFA Europa League, Premier League and EFL Cup has amounted to just 79 minutes, per WhoScored.com.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have all started ahead of the Netherlands international in the left-wing role in 2016-17, and he would not be hugely missed should he depart, per Luckhurst:

Memphis moved to United from PSV Eindhoven for £31 million in the summer of 2015 having been the Eredivisie's top scorer in 2014-15.

Under former Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal last season, he failed to find any kind of consistent form, netting just twice in 29 Premier League appearances, per WhoScored.

Under Mourinho, he has not looked much better, and there seems little chance of him getting a long run in the side.

Memphis is still only in the early stages of his career and has shown glimpses even at United that he could yet be a top-class player—he thrived on occasion in the Europa League in 2015-16.

A previous report suggested Roma had moved to take Memphis on loan in January with an option to buy him for £21 million at the end of the season, per TransferMarketWeb (via Toby Gannon in the Sun).

Everton manager Ronald Koeman is also clearly a fan of his fellow Dutchman, per Luckhurst.

"He's a young player with individual qualities, like aggression and efficiency," the Toffees boss said. "I would like him in January. He is a good and interesting player. He has shown that in his early days at Manchester United. But more recently it's been less. He needs to play more games."

Despite his recent travails, it seems there could be a future for Memphis on Merseyside or in Rome, but his days as a United player look to be numbered.
