'MLB The Show 17' Will Feature Retro Gameplay Mode

Andrew GouldDec 3, 2016

MLB The Show 17 will appease old-school gamers with a retro mode inspired by '90s baseball titles.

Sony treated fans to a glimpse of the new mode at PlayStation Experience 2016, where the company released the trailer. With former superstar Ken Griffey Jr. serving as the cover athlete, the popular franchise's next installment will revisit the outfielder's glory years.

Senior community specialist and game designer Ramone Russell wrote about the throwback reveal on PlayStation's official blog:

Introducing "Retro Mode," a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends.

Although the full trailer reveals lifelike graphics, some gamers will instead flock to the arcade-style simulation.

However successful the mode is, it still won't erase the void MVP Baseball left behind.
