Pierre-Paul Undergoes Surgery

Pierre-Paul announced the procedure on Instagram on Wednesday morning:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, citing a source, reported Pierre-Paul will miss six weeks of action.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, citing sources, reported on Tuesday that Pierre-Paul was in Philadelphia to meet with surgeon William Meyers about his injury. Rapoport noted that Meyers is "the sports world's expert on core muscle injuries."

Pierre-Paul is in the midst of a bounce-back season after missing half of 2015 due to a Fourth of July fireworks incident that caused excessive damage to his hand. He finished with just one sack in eight games upon returning.

The 27-year-old has been better in 2016, starting every game while totaling seven sacks and 50 tackles coming into Week 13.

"This is the new me," Pierre-Paul said of his play, per Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. "I got to adjust to what I'm capable of doing with my hand. I feel this is as well as I've played since my new beginning last year. I'm like a rookie all over again."

Pierre-Paul has been a productive member of the Giants defense since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2010. He went to two Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro when he tallied 16.5 sacks in 2011 for the eventual Super Bowl champs.

This season, he has paired with free-agent addition Olivier Vernon to create a formidable pass rush to lead New York's defense.

The Giants will need more production from Vernon as well as Romeo Okwara, Kerry Wynn and Odighizuwa with Pierre-Paul out.
